Cultural Competency CE Requirement for Illinois Clinical Psychologists – 2026 License Renewal Guide

Cultural Competency CE Requirement for Illinois Clinical Psychologists: Beginning with 2026 renewals, Illinois clinical psychologists must complete 1 hour of Cultural Competency continuing education (CE). This new mandate is part of a statewide initiative to advance health equity and ensure every patient receives respectful, inclusive care regardless of background.

If you’re a licensed clinical psychologist in Illinois, here’s what you need to know to stay compliant — and how to complete your training online with ease.

Illinois Requirement – Cultural Competency CE for Clinical Psychologists

Under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.5250, all Illinois

licensed healthcare professionals subject to continuing education — including clinical psychologists — must complete at least one hour of Cultural Competency CE during each renewal cycle.

This requirement takes effect for licenses renewing in 2026 and will continue to be required for all future renewals. Clinical psychologists are responsible for completing and documenting this CE as part of their license renewal portfolio.

Why Cultural Competency Matters in Mental Health

Cultural Competency CE helps clinical psychologists:

  • Understand how culture, identity, and lived experience shape mental health outcomes
  • Strengthen therapeutic rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Recognize and address implicit bias in clinical settings
  • Foster inclusive, equitable mental healthcare environments

This training isn’t just a regulatory requirement — it’s central to delivering effective, person-centered care that respects the full spectrum of human experience.

Accreditation

Renew Now CE is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education. While this Cultural Competency course meets ANCC standards and is accepted for many interprofessional CE requirements, Illinois clinical psychologists should confirm acceptance with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) or their employer before applying it toward license renewal.
