Implicit Bias CE Requirement for Illinois RNs

What Illinois Registered Nurses Need to Know About the Implicit Bias CE Requirement

The Implicit Bias CE Requirement for Illinois RNs began with 2023 license renewals. All Illinois Registered Nurses (RNs) must now complete 1 hour of Implicit Bias continuing education (CE) during each renewal cycle. This new requirement is part of a statewide initiative to reduce health disparities and improve patient outcomes by addressing unconscious bias in healthcare.

If you’re an RN licensed in Illinois, here’s what you need to know to stay compliant — and how to complete this training online, quickly and easily.

Illinois Requirement – Implicit Bias CE for RNs

Under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.500, all Illinois healthcare professionals who are subject to continuing education — including Registered Nurses — must complete at least one hour of Implicit Bias CE during each renewal cycle.

This requirement became mandatory for all license renewals due on or after January 1, 2023, and will remain in effect for every renewal period moving forward.

RNs are responsible for documenting this CE activity as part of their standard license renewal process and CE portfolio.

Why Implicit Bias Training Matters in Nursing Practice

Implicit Bias CE equips nurses with critical knowledge to:

  • Recognize how unconscious biases influence clinical decision-making
  • Provide more equitable and culturally responsive patient care
  • Build stronger trust with diverse patient populations
  • Reduce health disparities and improve overall care outcomes

This training is not just a compliance requirement — it’s a powerful tool to improve the patient experience and build a fairer healthcare system.

Accreditation

Renew Now CE is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education. Our Implicit Bias course meets ANCC standards and is accepted by the Illinois Board of Nursing. RNs should retain their certificate of completion as part of their CE documentation during the renewal process.
