Cultural Competency CE Requirement for Illinois RNs – 2026 License Renewal Guide

Illinois RNs preparing for their 2026 license renewal must now complete 1 hour of Cultural Competency continuing education (CE). This new requirement is part of a growing focus on equitable, inclusive healthcare — and it’s essential for nurses serving diverse patient populations across the state.

Here’s what Illinois RNs need to know to stay compliant and how to complete this training online with ease.

2026 Requirement – Cultural Competency CE for Illinois Nurses

Under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.5250, any healthcare professional subject to continuing education in Illinois — including registered nurses — must complete at least one hour of Cultural Competency training per renewal cycle.

This new rule takes effect with 2026 license renewals, and it applies to both RNs and APRNs.

Nurses must be prepared to document this course completion as part of their CE portfolio for IDFPR.

What Counts as Cultural Competency Training?

Cultural Competency CE helps nurses understand how cultural background, identity, and lived experience affect patient care, communication, and health outcomes.

The goal is to equip nurses to:

  • Provide respectful, inclusive care
  • Understand cultural influences on health behavior
  • Reduce implicit bias and health disparities
  • Strengthen patient trust and satisfaction
