Michigan Physician License Renewal Requirements

As a Michigan physician (MD or DO), it's crucial to stay updated on the state's Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements. Below is an overview of the key information needed to ensure compliance with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) during your 3-year renewal cycle.

CME Requirements for MDs and DOs

Total CME Hours: Physicians must complete 150 hours of CME every three years.

  • Medical Doctors (MDs): At least 75 hours must be in Category 1 CME programs
  • Osteopathic Physicians (DOs): At least 60 hours must be in Category 1, and 40 of those must be AOA-approved credits.

Topic-Specific Requirements

  • Implicit Bias Training: Beginning in 2021, physicians must complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the license cycle.
  • Pain and Symptom Management: 3 hours, including 1 hour focused on controlled substances prescribing.
  • Medical Ethics: 1 hour is required during each renewal cycle.

 

One-Time Requirements

  • Human Trafficking Training: A one-time training, required by all Michigan physicians.
  • Opioid and Controlled Substance Training: DEA-registered physicians must complete 8 hours on opioid use disorder management as part of the MATE Act.
