Searching for "Illinois LVN"? Illinois licenses LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses). LVN is the title used in Texas and California. If you hold an Illinois practical nursing license, the LPN section below is yours.

One Package Covers Both Licenses

Illinois requires 20 contact hours per 2-year renewal cycle for both RNs and LPNs, and both licenses share the same four mandated CE topics: Sexual Harassment Prevention, Implicit Bias, Cultural Competency, and Alzheimer's/Dementia.

Illinois Mandatory CE Requirements for RN and LPN Renewal

Illinois RNs and LPNs each complete 20 contact hours per 2-year license renewal cycle under Nurse Practice Act Rules Section 1300.130(a)(1). The four mandated topics below count toward those 20 hours — they do not add to them. This package includes all four:

1. Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

Required under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.400. Since January 1, 2020, Illinois DPR licensees who need CE to renew must complete 1 hour of sexual harassment prevention training. Training addresses identifying, preventing, and responding to sexual harassment in professional settings.

1 Hour Required • RN & LPN • ANCC P0557

2. Implicit Bias Awareness Training

Required under 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15.7 (Public Act 102-0004). Implicit bias occurs automatically and unintentionally, yet still affects judgments, decisions, and behaviors. Since January 1, 2023, this 1-hour course may count toward relicensure CE hours.

1 Hour Required • RN & LPN • ANCC P0557

3. Cultural Competency Training

Required under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.5250 and Public Act 103-0531. Since January 1, 2025, Illinois licensed nurses must complete a 1-hour cultural competency course as a condition of renewing a license. Training covers the integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities.

The course is repeated once every six years. A licensee who takes it more often may count it toward minimum CE hours, but no more than one credit hour in any single renewal period.

1 Hour Required • RN & LPN • ANCC P0557

4. Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Training

Required under 20 ILCS 2105/2105-365 (Public Act 102-0399) for nurses who provide health care services to and have direct patient interaction with adults age 26 or older. Curriculum covers identifying and diagnosing Alzheimer's, effective communication strategies, and management and care planning. Since January 1, 2023, this course may count toward the regular CE requirement.

1 Hour Required* • RN & LPN • ANCC P0557

Also note: Illinois nurses who work with children in a professional or official capacity must complete mandated reporter training at least every 6 years under the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act (325 ILCS 5/4), and must attest to their mandated reporter understanding at each renewal. Mandated reporter training is not included in this package.
