Texas BON Mandatory CE Requirements This Package Covers

Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority who renew via national certification still have mandatory targeted CE requirements every renewal cycle. This package addresses each one:

1. Nursing Jurisprudence & Ethics

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(g). Two contact hours of CE relating to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics before the end of every third two-year licensing period (every 6 years). Must cover the Texas Nursing Practice Act, BON rules, BON position statements, principles of nursing ethics, and professional boundaries. CNE only — CME cannot substitute for this requirement.

2 Hours • Required every 6 years • CNE only

2. Older Adult / Geriatric Care

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(h). Two contact hours of CE relating to older adult or geriatric populations required for APRNs whose practice includes those populations. Required every renewal cycle.

2 Hours • Required if working with geriatric population

3. Pain Management & Opioid Prescribing

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(c)(4). APRNs with prescriptive authority agreements authorizing opioid prescribing must complete not less than 2 contact hours annually regarding safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances. That is 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes 2 hours (Year 1).

2 Hours/Year (4 per cycle) • Required for opioid prescribers

4. Nutrition & Metabolic Health (Pending 2027)

The Texas Board of Nursing is expected to add a nutrition and metabolic health CE requirement in 2027. This course is included in this package now so you complete it before the mandate takes effect. Getting ahead of requirements is always the better path.

1 Hour • Pending 2027 mandate • Included now

5. Pharmacotherapeutics (Prescriptive Authority)

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(c)(3). APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete at least 5 additional contact hours of CE in pharmacotherapeutics per renewal period. These hours are required regardless of whether you renew via CE hours or national certification. This package includes 12 pharmacotherapy hours across two courses, more than doubling the 5-hour minimum.

+5 Hours Required • This package includes 12 pharm hours

6. Human Trafficking Prevention

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(i) and Texas Health & Safety Code. Required every renewal for APRNs who provide direct patient care. This course is provided free of charge through the Texas HHS Commission Learning Portal and is not included in this package.

Free from Texas HHS • Required every renewal • Not included — it’s free

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this 17-hour package designed for?

This package is designed for Texas APRNs and NPs who maintain or renew a Board-approved national nursing certification to satisfy the 20-hour general CE requirement. If your certification renewal fulfills the general CE hours, you still need to complete all mandatory targeted CE topics and the required +5 pharmacotherapy hours above 20. This package covers exactly that.

What mandatory CE topics are included?

This package includes all mandatory targeted CE categories for Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority: Texas Nursing Ethics & Jurisprudence (2 hours), Geriatric Care for Nurses (2 hours), Pain & Pain Symptom Management (2 hours, required annually for opioid prescribers), Nutrition & Metabolic Health (1 hour, pending 2027 mandate), and Pharmacology: Common Primary Care & Med-Surg Medications (10 hours, satisfies +5 pharm requirement).

Why do cert-maintaining Texas NPs still need to complete CE?

National certification renewal satisfies the 20-hour general CE requirement per Texas Board Rule 216.3, but it does not satisfy mandatory targeted CE. Regardless of how you fulfill the general hours, Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority must still complete: 2 hours of Ethics & Jurisprudence (every 6 years), 2 hours of geriatric care CE, 2 hours annually of pain management for opioid prescribers, and at least +5 pharmacotherapy hours above 20. This package covers all of those.

Does this package include the required pharmacotherapy hours above 20?

Yes — and it exceeds the minimum. Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete at least 5 additional hours of pharmacotherapeutics above the 20-hour general CE requirement, regardless of whether they renew via CE or national certification. This package includes 12 pharmacotherapy hours across two courses, more than double the 5-hour minimum.

What is the pain management CE requirement for Texas APRNs who prescribe opioids?

Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority agreements authorizing opioid prescribing must complete not less than 2 contact hours annually on safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances (Texas Board Rule 216.3(c)(4)). That is 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes 2 hours covering Year 1. You will need an additional 2 hours for Year 2.

Is the Human Trafficking Prevention course included?

No — and you should not have to pay for it. Texas APRNs must complete an approved Human Trafficking Prevention course every renewal, but the Texas Health and Human Services Commission provides this course free of charge through the Texas HHS Learning Portal. This package links directly to the free course rather than charging you for a required state-provided resource.

Does Renew Now CE require a subscription?

No. This is a one-time purchase of $99. There are no monthly memberships, auto-renewals, or subscription fees. Pay once and get lifetime access to all 17 hours of CE.

When are certificates available?

Instantly upon completing each course. After passing the assessment for each course, your Certificate of Completion is immediately available to download as a PDF. Keep these certificates on file for at least 6 years per Texas BON guidance in case of renewal audit.

What if I don't pass the post-test on my first attempt?

No problem — you have unlimited attempts on every post-test at no extra charge. Review the material at your own pace and retake the assessment as many times as you need. There is no penalty, and your progress is always saved. Once you pass, your certificate downloads instantly.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes — 30 days, no questions asked. If you are not completely satisfied with the quality of our content within 30 days of purchase, contact us for a full refund. We are confident in the quality of our courses, but your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Will I need to submit my certificates to the state of Texas before renewing my NP license?

Yes. Beginning September 1, 2026, nurses will need to upload all required Continuing Education (CE) certificates prior to renewing their license. This is a result of Senate Bill 912, passed during the 89th Legislative Session. Development and testing are underway to make this as smooth as possible for nurses.
