One-Time Requirements (Already Completed for Most Renewing APRNs)

• Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) — 2 hrs: Required within the first year of licensure for APRNs authorized to access the PMP. This is a new licensee requirement only — not applicable at renewal.
• Forensic Evidence Collection — 2 hrs: Required only for APRNs working in emergency room settings. One-time requirement, not included in this package.

Important Note: Per Texas Board Rule 216.3, the 20 CE hours required for APRN renewal also satisfy the 20-hour RN renewal requirement — these are not separate or additive. However, the +5 pharmacotherapy hours are in addition to the 20 general hours.

How many CE hours do Texas APRNs need for license renewal?

Texas APRNs must complete 20 contact hours every two years. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete an additional 5 hours in pharmacotherapeutics above the 20-hour general requirement — for a total of 25 hours minimum. This package provides 23 general hours and 10 pharmacotherapy hours, exceeding both requirements.

Are the 20 APRN CE hours separate from the 20 RN hours?

No. Per Texas Board Rule 216.3, the 20 CE hours required for APRN renewal also satisfy the RN 20-hour renewal requirement. They are not additive. Only the +5 pharmacotherapy hours are in addition to the 20.

Why don’t other Texas APRN CE packages include the pharmacotherapy hours?

Many CE providers build packages around the standard 20-hour RN requirement and exclude the +5 pharmacotherapy hours because they are an additional, APRN-specific requirement. This leaves prescribing NPs without a complete solution. This package is specifically designed to include those hours so you renew with confidence.

Do I need to complete the pain management CE every year?

Yes, if you prescribe opioids. APRNs with prescriptive authority for opioids must complete 2 contact hours annually on safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances — that’s 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes 2 of those hours (Year 1). You will need to complete an additional 2 hours for Year 2 of your renewal cycle.

Do I need to complete the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) course for renewal?

Not at renewal. The PMP course is a one-time requirement completed within the first year of initial licensure. If you are renewing your license, you have already satisfied this requirement. It is not included in this package because renewing APRNs do not need it.

Can I use CME credit toward my Texas APRN renewal requirements?

Yes, for most requirements. Texas APRNs may use AMA PRA Category 1 CME contact hours for most BON continuing competency requirements. The one exception is the Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics requirement, which must be completed through CNE (continuing nursing education) only — CME cannot be substituted for that specific course.

What is the pending 2027 nutrition mandate?

The Texas BON is expected to add a nutrition and metabolic health CE requirement by 2027. The 1-hour Nutrition & Metabolic Health course in this package is included proactively so you complete it now — before it becomes mandatory — and are already ahead of the requirement when it takes effect.

Where do I get the Human Trafficking Prevention course?

The Texas HHS Commission provides this course free of charge. You can access it at the Texas HHS Learning Portal. It is not included in this package because you should not have to pay for it.
