Texas BON CE Requirements for APRNs with Prescriptive Authority

Texas APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete 25 total contact hours for renewal — 20 general CE hours plus 5 additional pharmacotherapy hours above 20. This package covers all required categories:

1. Nursing Jurisprudence & Ethics

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(g). Two contact hours of CE relating to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics required before the end of every third two-year licensing period (every 6 years). Must contain information on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, BON rules, BON position statements, principles of nursing ethics, and professional boundaries. CNE only — CME cannot substitute for this requirement.

2 Hours • Required every 6 years • CNE only

2. Older Adult / Geriatric Care

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(h). Two contact hours of CE relating to older adult or geriatric populations required for APRNs whose practice includes those populations. Hours count toward the 20-hour general CE requirement.

2 Hours • Required if working with geriatric population

3. Pain Management & Opioid Prescribing

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(c)(4). APRNs with prescriptive authority agreements authorizing opioid prescribing must complete not less than 2 contact hours annually regarding safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances. That is 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes 2 hours (Year 1). Hours count toward the 20-hour general CE requirement.

2 Hours/Year (4 per cycle) • Required for opioid prescribers

4. Pharmacotherapeutics (Prescriptive Authority)

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(c)(3). APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete at least 5 additional contact hours of CE in pharmacotherapeutics per renewal period. These hours are above and beyond the 20 general CE hours, bringing the total minimum to 25 hours. This package includes 15 pharmacotherapy hours, tripling the minimum requirement.

+5 Hours Above 20 • This package includes 15 pharm hours

5. Human Trafficking Prevention

Required under Texas Board Rule 216.3(i) and Texas Health & Safety Code. A Human Trafficking Prevention course approved by the Texas HHS Commission is required every renewal for APRNs who provide direct patient care. This course is available free of charge through the Texas HHS Commission Learning Portal. It is not included in this package because you should not have to pay for it.

Free from Texas HHS • Required every renewal

Important: Per Texas Board Rule 216.3, the 20 CE hours required for APRN renewal also satisfy the RN 20-hour renewal requirement — these are not separate. Only the +5 pharmacotherapy hours are above and beyond the 20. APRNs who achieve, maintain, or renew a Board-approved national nursing certification may satisfy the 20-hour general requirement through certification, but the +5 pharmacotherapy hours are still required regardless of certification status.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CE hours do Texas APRNs and NPs need for license renewal?

Texas APRNs must complete 20 contact hours every two-year renewal period. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete an additional 5 hours in pharmacotherapeutics above the 20-hour general requirement — for a minimum of 25 hours total.

Does this package include the required pharmacotherapy hours that most Texas APRN CE packages leave out?

Yes — and that is the main reason this package exists.

Are the 20 APRN CE hours separate from and in addition to the 20 RN CE hours?

No. Per Texas Board Rule 216.3, the 20 CE hours required for APRN renewal also satisfy the RN 20-hour renewal requirement. They are not additive — you are not required to complete 40 hours total. Only the +5 pharmacotherapy hours are in addition to the 20 general hours, bringing the minimum for prescribing APRNs to 25 hours per renewal cycle.

Do I need to complete the pain management CE every year as a Texas NP who prescribes opioids?

Yes. APRNs with prescriptive authority for opioids must complete 2 contact hours annually on safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances — that is 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes the 2-hour Pain and Pain Symptom Management course covering Year 1 of your cycle. You will need an additional 2 hours for Year 2. Plan accordingly before your renewal deadline.

Where can Texas NPs and APRNs get a complete CE renewal package that includes both general hours and pharmacotherapy?

Renew Now CE offers a 28-hour Texas APRN and NP Complete CE Renewal Package ($149) that includes all six courses needed for a full Texas BON-compliant renewal: Texas Nursing Ethics and Jurisprudence (2 hrs), Geriatric Care (2 hrs), Pain and Pain Symptom Management (2 hrs), Nutrition and Metabolic Health (1 hr), Heart Failure Management (6 hrs), and Pharmacology - Common Primary Care and Med-Surg Medications (10 pharmacology hrs). ANCC-accredited Provider P0557, Texas BON accepted, 100% online with instant certificates. No subscription required.

Where do I get the Texas Human Trafficking Prevention course?

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission provides the approved Human Trafficking Prevention course free of charge. It is not included in this paid package because you should not have to pay for a course the state provides at no cost. Complete the course through the Texas HHS Learning Portal and keep your certificate for renewal records.

Does this package include all pain management hours for opioid prescribers?

No, not for the full two-year cycle. APRNs with prescriptive authority for opioids must complete 2 contact hours annually on safe and effective pain management related to controlled substances, or 4 hours per two-year renewal cycle. This package includes 2 hours. You will need an additional 2 hours for the second year if this requirement applies to you.

Do I need the Prescription Monitoring Program course for renewal?

Usually no. The Prescription Monitoring Program course is a one-time requirement completed within the first year of licensure for APRNs authorized to access the PMP. It is not included in this renewal package because it is generally a new-licensee requirement, not a recurring renewal requirement.

When are certificates available?

Certificates are available right after you successfully complete each course. Download and keep your certificates for Texas Board of Nursing renewal records, employer documentation, and possible audit requests.

Does Renew Now CE require a subscription?

No. This package is a one-time purchase. There are no monthly memberships, auto-renewals, or subscription fees.

What if I don't pass the post-test on my first attempt?

No problem — you have unlimited attempts on every post-test at no extra charge. Review the material at your own pace and retake the assessment as many times as you need. There is no penalty, and your progress is always saved. Once you pass, your certificate downloads instantly.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes — 30 days, no questions asked. If you are not completely satisfied with the quality of our content within 30 days of purchase, contact us for a full refund. We are confident in the quality of our courses, but your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Will I need to submit my certificates to the state of Texas before renewing my NP license?

Yes. Beginning September 1, 2026, nurses will need to upload all required Continuing Education (CE) certificates prior to renewing their license. This is a result of Senate Bill 912, passed during the 89th Legislative Session. Development and testing are underway to make this as smooth as possible for nurses.
