New Jersey Board of Nursing CE Requirements

The New Jersey Board of Nursing mandates specific continuing education requirements for license renewal. This package is designed to satisfy all mandatory requirements for RNs, LPNs, and APRNs.

  • 1 hour on prescription opioid drugs (required each renewal)
  • 1 hour on organ and tissue donation (one-time requirement)
  • 1 hour on implicit bias (if providing perinatal care)

For APRNs / Nurse Practitioners

Legal Authority

These requirements are established under N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.3 (Continuing Education Requirements) and administered by the New Jersey Board of Nursing under the Division of Consumer Affairs. Additional requirements for perinatal providers are established under P.L. 2021, Chapter 79 (C.26:2H-12.108).

Carry-Over Provision: Per N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.3, you may carry over up to 15 additional contact hours into your next renewal period if you complete more than the required 30 hours.

📋 Implicit Bias Education (NJ-Specific Notice)

Under New Jersey law (P.L. 2021, Chapter 79), implicit bias education is required only for nurses who provide perinatal treatment and care to pregnant persons.

This includes: certified nurse midwives, certified professional midwives, licensed professional nurses and practical nurses providing perinatal care, and APRNs in perinatal settings.

This course is included in the package to ensure full compliance where applicable. Nurses who do not provide perinatal care are not required to complete this course but may find it valuable for professional development.

💊 For Nurse Practitioners / APRNs

APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete a one-time requirement of 6 hours in pharmacology related to controlled substances, including:

  • Addiction prevention and management
  • Issues concerning prescription opioids
  • Responsible opioid prescribing
  • Alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain

Frequently Asked Questions: New Jersey Nursing CE

How many continuing education contact hours must I complete to renew my New Jersey nursing license?

Each licensee must complete a minimum of 30 contact hours of continuing education during the two-year period preceding renewal. For example, to renew a license expiring May 31, 2027, you must complete 30 hours between June 1, 2025 and May 31, 2027. This package includes 30+ hours to ensure full compliance.

What types of CE courses does the New Jersey Board of Nursing accept?

Per N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.3(d), continuing education courses must be approved by a credentialing agency accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Renew Now CE is ANCC-accredited (Provider P0557), so all courses in this package are accepted by the NJ Board of Nursing.

Can I complete my contact hours through online courses?

Yes. The NJ Board of Nursing confirms that continuing education contact hours may be obtained through successful completion of online courses. All courses in this package are 100% online and self-paced. Remember to download and retain your certificates of completion.

How long do I have to keep my continuing education certificates?

The NJ Board of Nursing recommends that you retain continuing education certificates for at least five years. Renew Now CE stores your completion records in your account, so you can access and download certificates anytime.

Will the Board ever ask for copies of my CE certificates?

Yes. The NJ Board may request copies of your continuing education certificates for various reasons, such as a random CE audit or during a disciplinary investigation. This is why we recommend keeping certificates for at least 5 years and ensuring all certificates include required documentation—which all Renew Now CE certificates do.

What happens if I don't complete my required CE hours?

The NJ Board of Nursing may impose sanctions pursuant to N.J.S.A. 45:1-21 and 45:1-22 for failing to satisfy continuing education requirements. Completing this package ensures you meet all requirements and avoid any compliance issues.

Can I carry over extra CE hours to my next renewal period?

Yes. Per N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.3, you may carry over up to 15 additional contact hours into the next renewal period. This package includes more than 30 hours, allowing you to bank extra hours for your next cycle.

I'm retired but want to keep my license active. Do I still need CE?

Yes. If you want to maintain an active nursing license in New Jersey, you must complete the full 30 contact hours of continuing education—even if you're retired or not currently practicing. If you don't plan to return to nursing, you may place your license in inactive status to avoid the CE requirement.

I don't practice nursing in New Jersey. Do I still need to complete CE?

Yes. If you hold an active New Jersey nursing license, you must complete all required continuing education contact hours regardless of where you practice. The requirement is tied to maintaining an active NJ license, not your practice location.

Is the implicit bias course required for all New Jersey nurses?

No. Under P.L. 2021, Chapter 79, implicit bias education is required only for healthcare professionals who provide perinatal treatment and care to pregnant persons. This includes nurses working in labor and delivery, prenatal care, postpartum care, and related settings. The course is included in this package for those who need it.

Does Renew Now CE require a subscription?

No subscriptions, ever. You pay one price for this package with no monthly memberships or hidden fees. Purchase once, complete at your pace, and download instant certificates for each course completed.
