New Jersey's March 30, 2026 APN law establishes additional pharmacology education requirements for qualifying APNs who practice independently without a joint protocol. Implicit Bias Education (NJ-Specific Notice)
Under New Jersey law (P.L. 2021, Chapter 79), implicit bias education is required only for nurses who provide perinatal treatment and care to pregnant persons.
This includes certified nurse midwives, certified professional midwives, licensed professional nurses and practical nurses providing perinatal care, and APRNs in perinatal settings.
This course is included in the package to ensure full compliance where applicable. Nurses who do not provide perinatal care are not required to complete this course but may find it valuable for professional development.
For Nurse Practitioners / APRNs
This package includes more than the minimum pharmacology contact hours required for New Jersey APRN license renewal.
APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete a one-time requirement of 6 hours in pharmacology related to controlled substances, including:
- Pharmacologic therapy
- Addiction prevention and management
- Issues concerning prescription opioids
- Responsible opioid prescribing
- Alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain
- Risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion
APRNs should complete the pharmacology-designated courses as part of their renewal requirements. The additional 2 hours of end-of-life care is also included.
