ANCC’s OB-CE Renewal Option: What It Is, and Why It Doesn’t Replace Your 25 Pharmacology Hours

Published July 21, 2026 · Renew Now CE

Quick answer: ANCC’s outcomes-based continuing education (OB-CE) Level Credit can help satisfy the continuing education contact-hour portion of certification renewal, but it cannot currently be used in place of the required 25 continuing education contact hours in pharmacology. Advanced practice nurses submitting outcomes-based CE for renewal must still include certificates showing 25 completed pharmacology contact hours. Every certificant must also complete one full professional development activity as part of renewal.

If you certify or renew through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), you may have seen references to a newer renewal pathway built around outcomes-based continuing education (OB-CE) Level Credit. It’s a genuinely useful option—but it has also created some confusion, especially among advanced practice nurses trying to understand how it interacts with the pharmacology requirement. Here’s a plain-language breakdown, and what it means if you’re renewing as a nurse practitioner.

What is OB-CE Level Credit?

Outcomes-based CE is a model that awards credit based on demonstrated learning outcomes rather than seat time alone. ANCC recognizes OB-CE Level Credit as one way certificants can build evidence of continued competence during their five-year renewal cycle. In practice, it can count toward the continuing education contact-hour (CE CH) portion of your renewal requirements.

That’s the part that’s easy to over-read. Because OB-CE can satisfy contact-hour requirements, some nurses have assumed a single high-level OB-CE credit might replace their entire CE obligation—including the pharmacology hours advanced practice nurses must document. That’s not how it currently works.

The key point for nurse practitioners: pharmacology hours are separate

ANCC OB-CE Level Credit cannot currently be used in lieu of the required 25 pharmacology contact hours. For all APRN outcomes-based CE submissions, the renewal application must include certificates showing 25 completed CE contact hours of pharmacology.

In other words, no matter which renewal pathway you use, if you’re an advanced practice nurse, the 25-hour pharmacology requirement stands on its own. OB-CE credit doesn’t fold it in, waive it, or shrink it. You still need 25 documented pharmacology contact hours, with certificates, in your application.

Two more details worth knowing

Beyond the pharmacology point, two related rules tend to trip people up:

  • You still complete a professional development activity. Even when OB-CE Level Credit is used toward contact hours, every certificant must also select and complete one professional development activity in its entirety as part of renewal.
  • No double-counting. An activity used to claim OB-CE Level Credit toward the mandatory contact-hour requirement can’t also be counted as that professional development activity. They’re separate obligations.

What this means for your renewal plan

If you’re a Family Nurse Practitioner or other APRN renewing with ANCC, the practical takeaway is simple: plan for your 25 pharmacology contact hours as a fixed, documented requirement, and treat OB-CE credit as something that helps elsewhere in your cycle—not as a substitute for pharmacology. Keep your certificates; your application needs them.

ANCC renewal requirements can change. Always confirm current requirements on the official ANCC renewals page and in the downloadable renewal requirements document before finalizing your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ANCC OB-CE Level Credit replace my 25 pharmacology hours?

No. OB-CE Level Credit cannot currently be used in lieu of the required 25 pharmacology contact hours. APRN outcomes-based CE renewal applications must include certificates showing 25 completed pharmacology contact hours.

Does OB-CE credit count toward continuing education contact hours at all?

Yes. OB-CE Level Credit may be used to help meet continuing education contact-hour requirements—it just can’t replace the separate pharmacology requirement for advanced practice nurses.

Do I still need a professional development activity if I use OB-CE credit?

Yes. Every certificant must select and complete one professional development activity in full as part of renewal, and an activity used for OB-CE contact-hour credit can’t also count as that professional development activity.

Where can I confirm the current ANCC renewal requirements?

Check the official ANCC renewals page at nursingworld.org and the downloadable renewal requirements document, since requirements are updated periodically.

This article is for general informational purposes and reflects ANCC renewal guidance as understood on July 21, 2026. It is not official ANCC guidance. Requirements change; verify current rules with ANCC before submitting a renewal application.

📚 CE Requirements Deep Dive for 2026 ANCC AGPCNP-BC Renewal

What are the exact CE hour requirements for ANCC AGPCNP-BC renewal?

For a valid 2026 renewal of your AGPCNP-BC certification, the ANCC requires you to complete 75 total contact hours of continuing education. A critical and mandatory component of this is that 25 of these contact hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics. The remaining 50 hours can be fulfilled through various professional development activities, but the 25 pharm hours are non-negotiable. Our package is specifically designed to meet this core requirement.

What are the approved subject areas and provider requirements?

All continuing education must be directly related to the AGPCNP specialty. The content should enhance your clinical knowledge and practice. Most importantly, the CE provider must be accredited by the ANCC. Renew Now CE is an ANCC-accredited provider (Provider Number: P0557), which means all our courses are guaranteed to be accepted by the ANCC for your certification renewal.

How does your package fulfill the pharmacotherapeutics requirement?

Our 25-hour AGPCNP Pharmacotherapeutics Package provides the exact 25 hours you need in this mandatory category. The package includes four targeted courses:

The ANCC charges a renewal fee that varies based on your membership status with the American Nurses Association (ANA).

  • Non-members: $350
  • ANA members: Can be as low as $250

These fees are paid directly to the ANCC and are separate from your continuing education costs.

How much does continuing education for ANCC renewal cost?

The cost of CE can vary widely. Purchasing individual courses to meet the 25-hour pharmacotherapeutics requirement could easily cost over $400. Our 25-hour AGPCNP Pharmacotherapeutics Package offers a significant saving at just $250. This streamlined approach not only saves you money but also the time and effort of finding and verifying multiple courses from different providers.

What is my total renewal investment?

Your total investment to renew your AGPCNP-BC certification in 2026 will be:

  • CE Cost: $250 (with our package)
  • ANCC Fee: $250 – $350 (depending on ANA membership)
  • Total Investment: $500 – $600

By planning ahead, you can avoid late fees and the stress of a lapsed certification, which could lead to missed work and lost income.

When should I start my renewal process?

The ANCC allows you to submit your renewal application up to one year before your certification expires. We recommend starting your CE at least 3-6 months before your deadline. This provides ample time to complete the courses at your own pace, prepare your documentation, and submit your application without rushing.

Do I Need ANCC Certification CE for Nurse Practitioner Renewal in 2026? Note new information for Feb 1, 2027

Question: Is continuing education (CE) training mandatory for Nurse Practitioners renewing their ANCC certification in the United States?

Answer: Yes. Nurse Practitioners renewing their ANCC certification must complete 75 mandatory continuing education hours, including 25 hours in pharmacology, within the five-year certification period. At least 60 of these hours must be formally approved by an accredited provider such as ANCC, Joint Accreditation, or AMA-approved CME. Completion of one of the eight ANCC certification renewal categories is also required.

Renew Now CE provides an instant certificate after course completion for your certification renewal records.

ANCC NP Renewal Requirements – Finish Efficiently

You must renew your ANCC nurse practitioner (NP) board certification every five years. The process isn’t necessarily difficult, but it can be time consuming. Maintaining your certification throughout the five-year process by tracking your progress is key. If you wait until your renewal and must input between 75 and 150 hours of continuing education credit into the ANCC’s website, it will take a great deal of time.

I’ve been an ANCC certified NP since 2012, so I’m in my third renewal cycle. I’ve found that by using a filing system to keep track of mandatory continuing education hours in addition to chosen renewal requirement categories makes the renewal more seamless.

To avoid retesting, an NP must renew their certification before it lapses and demonstrate proof of completion of the mandatory 75 continuing education hours. Twenty-five of the mandatory hours must be in pharmacology.

Renewing your American Nurses Credentialing Center Nurse Practitioner NP Certification – Using a filing system

You’ll need to input your completed hours into the ANCC’s website. I have found that immediately printing your certificate, putting it into a file folder labeled for the window of your renewal cycle, then inputting these hours to the ANCC’s site, and tracking your total on the outside of the file folder is very helpful in tracking the mandatory hours you’ve completed.

According to the ANCC, if you’re renewing a current, not lapsed license, the steps are as follows:

ANCC Certification renewal eligibility when your certification credential is CURRENT. All requirements must be met within the current 5-year certification period.

  • Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or the professional legally recognized equivalent in another country.
  • For National Healthcare Disaster certificants, hold the same license, registration, certificate, or degree used for initial test eligibility.
  • Hold a current ANCC board certification.
  • Complete the Mandatory 75 continuing education hours. All certificants renewing a CNS or NP certification are required to complete 25 hours of pharmacology as a portion of the mandatory 75 CH.
  • Complete at least one (1) of the eight certification renewal categories in its entirety. (See pages 7-8 for additional information regarding the renewal categories.)
  • Pay the renewal fee.

If you do lapse without renewing on time, the ANCC has a policy for reactivation. You can read about it in their policy: Certification Renewal Requirements

The ANCC Certification Renewal Categories

ANCC Renewal Categories Are Becoming Three Pathways (February 1, 2027)

ANCC has consolidated its eight renewal categories into three professional development pathways, effective for renewal applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027. You select one pathway and complete one activity within it.

Pathway 1 — Additional Continuing Education. An additional 75 contact hours beyond the mandatory 75, for 150 total. Academic coursework converts at 15 CE CH per semester credit and 12.5 per quarter credit, so five semester credits still equals 75 hours.

Pathway 2 — Practice. A minimum of 1,000 nursing practice hours, or 120 preceptorship hours, or 120 volunteer service hours, in your certification role, population, or setting.

Pathway 3 — Scholarship. One EBP or QI project, one publication (or five non-peer-reviewed articles), presentations totaling five clock hours, or one research activity.

What this changes for NPs

Test or Portfolio is gone. Renewal by examination is no longer available for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027. The exam still appears in reactivation — a certification lapsed more than two years can only be reactivated by retaking and passing it, and only where an exam still exists. Certifications designated “Renewal Only” cannot be reactivated at all after two years.

Volunteer service is now measured in hours. The previous standard of two or more consecutive years becomes 120 volunteer service hours.

Academic credits are no longer a standalone category. They convert into continuing education contact hours instead.

The date that catches people out

The new framework applies based on when you submit, not when you completed the activities. Applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027 are evaluated under the updated requirements regardless of when the CE was earned. Applications may be submitted up to a year early, so if your certification expires in 2027, you may have a genuine choice about which framework assesses you.

Continuing Education Hours for ANCC Board Certification Renewal

Some important highlights regarding continuing education requirements:

  • There are 75 mandatory continuing education hours, of which 25 must be in pharmacology.
  • You can choose one of your certification renewal categories as an additional 75 continuing education hours for a total of 150 continuing education hours.
  • For the mandatory hours, at least 60 of the 75 must be formally approved hours, i.e., hours from an accredited provider or approver of nursing education, for example, an ANCC approved provider.
  • The hours can also be approved through Joint Accreditation or AMA, continuing medical education (CME) hours.
  • You can claim credit for a specific course just once. Even if you take a course multiple times in the five-year renewal window, you can only claim credit once.
