If you are a nursing or NP student staring down a literature review, you have probably already tried asking an AI tool for help. And you have probably already learned the hard way that it will hand you a beautifully formatted citation for a study that does not exist.

Why AI invents references

A general purpose chatbot is a language model. It predicts what a plausible citation looks like, and it is very good at that. It is not looking anything up. So when you ask it for five studies on nurse burnout and turnover, it produces five things that look like studies. Some will be real. Some will have the right journal and a made up author. Some will not exist at all. Your professor will find out, and it will not go well.

The fix is not to stop using AI. The fix is to connect it to a real database so it can only cite what it actually retrieved.

The workflow

This is what we do. It uses Claude with the PubMed connector turned on, which means every search runs against the real PubMed index and every reference comes back with a PMID you can click.

Setup: connect Claude to PubMed

This takes about two minutes and you only do it once. In the paper we walk through the same five steps.

  1. Open an account at claude.ai. When we published, connectors required a paid plan. Check the current plans before you sign up, and check whether your school has access through a campus license. Many now do.
  2. Go to Settings. It is in the sidebar or under your account menu.
  3. Select Connectors.
  4. Find PubMed and turn it on. This gives Claude direct access to the National Library of Medicine’s index of more than 35 million biomedical citations.
  5. Start a new conversation and paste your prompt. Claude will run a live query against PubMed and return real indexed records with links you can click. Nothing from memory. Nothing invented.

That is the whole setup. Everything after this is about asking good questions and doing your own thinking.

The workflow

  1. Write your clinical question before you write anything else. One sentence. What do you need to know and about whom? “What interventions reduce medication errors among new graduate nurses in acute care?” Everything downstream depends on this being specific.
  2. Build your prompt from the question. Here is the structure we developed for the paper, adapted for a student literature review. Fill in the brackets and paste it into Claude. Identify peer reviewed research published within the past [5] years on [your topic] among [your population, e.g., new graduate nurses in U.S. acute care settings]. Prioritize systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, large cohort studies, and national surveys. Exclude editorials, letters, and commentaries. [Add any other exclusions your assignment requires, such as non U.S. studies or pediatric populations.] For each study provide the full citation with PMID, study design and population, key findings relevant to my question, and the direct PubMed link. The pieces matter. The date range keeps you current. The evidence hierarchy pushes stronger studies to the top. The output format gives you exactly what you need for your matrix or annotated bibliography without reformatting.
  3. Search the synonyms, not just your term. This is the lesson from the paper that surprised us most. The literature describes the same concept with different words, and your search only covers the words you used. Implicit bias is also unconscious bias, implicit prejudice, automatic associations, and cognitive bias. Medication errors are also medication administration errors, adverse drug events, and near misses. Ask Claude to list the synonyms and MeSH terms for your concept, then run your prompt again with “also described as” and the full list. A polished answer from a single term feels complete. It is not.
  4. Ask for more than you need. Twenty to thirty hits is a good first pile for a student paper. Follow up prompts take seconds. “Narrow to the last three years.” “Only studies that measured error rates.” “Drop anything from a single site.” This is where the tool earns its keep. The speed is not in the first search, it is in the fifth.
  5. Screen abstracts with Claude. Decide for yourself. Ask it to summarize each abstract in two sentences and flag which ones actually answer your question. Then you read the flagged ones. The tool narrows the pile. It does not pick your sources, and it does not know what your professor is looking for.
  6. Get the full text of your final picks. Many PubMed records link to free full text through PubMed Central. For the rest, use your school library. Never cite a study you have only seen the abstract of. A real citation is not the same thing as a correctly interpreted study.
  7. Synthesize around your question, not around the articles. This is the step most students skip and the one that separates a lit review from a book report. Ask Claude to organize your chosen studies by theme or finding, and to point out where they agree, where they conflict, and what nobody has studied yet. That structure is your outline. A literature review is an argument built from evidence, not a list of summaries.
  8. Verify every citation before you submit. Click each PMID. Confirm the authors, year, journal, title, and volume match your reference list. Then open the study and confirm it says what you said it says. The paper calls this the step where human oversight is most critical and least optional. For you it is ten minutes and the difference between a clean paper and an academic integrity meeting.

What the AI does and what you do

The division of labor is simple. AI searches PubMed, screens, summarizes, and organizes. You define the question, make every judgment call about relevance and quality, read the full text, and write the paper. The paper we published calls this keeping the practitioner as the human in the loop. For a student it is the same idea. The tool makes you faster. It does not make you the author.

A note on academic integrity

Check your program’s AI policy before you start. Most programs now allow AI for searching and organizing as long as you disclose it and the writing is your own. Some do not.

Renewing Your Nebraska NP License by October 31, 2026: The Free Path and the Rule That Changed

If you hold a Nebraska RN or APRN license, it expires on October 31, 2026. That is a few weeks out, and if you are a nurse practitioner, the amount you need to spend on continuing education to get across that line may be zero.

There is also a rule change that most continuing education sites have not caught up with yet, and it changes what counts. Worth five minutes before you start clicking through courses.

What Nebraska actually checks when an NP renews

Four things, and only one of them involves continuing education at all.

  • Current national certification in your role and population focus
  • A current Nebraska RN license, or a multistate compact license in your primary state of residence
  • If you have held the license more than five years, at least 2,080 hours of NP practice in the previous five years
  • Three hours of opiate prescribing CE, but only if you prescribe controlled substances

What is not on that list is a contact hour requirement attached to the APRN license itself. Nebraska does not impose one.

Your certification already covers the RN side

Your NP license sits on an RN license, and the RN license renews on continued competency. Twenty contact hours is one accepted pathway. It is not the only one. Holding or maintaining current certification in a nursing specialty from a nationally recognized certifying organization is its own pathway.

You already have that. Nebraska requires national certification for your APRN license, so the thing you maintain for one requirement satisfies the other. No twenty hours needed.

Two things that trip people up here. If your Nebraska license was first issued during this renewal period, you do not owe CE for this first renewal at all. And if you live in another compact state, your RN license renews under that state’s rules rather than Nebraska’s.

The three opiate hours, and where to get them free

This applies only if you prescribe controlled substances. No DEA registration, no requirement.

Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-145(6), which came out of LB731 in 2018, prescribers including NPs and certified nurse midwives complete at least three hours of opiate prescribing CE every two years. A half hour of that three has to cover the prescription drug monitoring program.

Nebraska DHHS gives the whole thing away. Under the section labeled Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, and Certified Nurse Midwife there are seven modules totaling 4.0 hours. You need 3.0. One combination that hits it exactly:

You are not required to use the state’s version. Nebraska says plainly that NPs and CNMs may take opiate prescribing education from other sources of their choice. The one caution the state adds is that PDMP content from outside Nebraska may not prepare you to use the Nebraska system.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Plenty of “”free”” CE is free to watch and then charges you for the certificate, which is the only part your Board cares about. Nebraska’s modules are genuinely free end to end, certificate included. We checked.

The rule that changed, and why it matters here

The Nebraska Board of Nursing’s advisory opinion on continuing education was adopted in 2024 and revised in September 2025. It says that beginning with licensure renewal in 2025, non-peer-reviewed offerings are no longer accepted for renewal purposes. Nurses need approved nursing continuing education from an approved provider.

Now put that next to something DHHS says about its own free modules: they are not peer reviewed, and may not meet requirements for renewal of board certification.

Both statements are on the same agency’s website, and together they mean the free hours do exactly one job. They satisfy the opiate requirement. They do not count toward the twenty contact hours an RN or LPN needs, and they probably will not count toward your ANCC or AANPCB recertification.

Plenty of CE sites are still publishing Nebraska’s pre-2019 peer-review language, which the Board specifically removed. If you are cross-checking this against another site and the two disagree, the advisory opinion is the more current document.

Finish the free path

Nebraska does not collect hours electronically. You attest at renewal, and the Nursing Licensure Unit runs random audits. If you get pulled, you submit certificates totaling three hours. So download the PDF after each module instead of trusting that you will find the confirmation email in two years.

One more thing worth knowing: this requirement is temporary. The statute terminates January 1, 2029, which makes the October 2028 renewal the last one it applies to.

When paying is the better move

If your certification cycle is nowhere near due and you only need to clear Nebraska, take the free modules and stop reading. You are done, and it cost you nothing.

Paying earns its keep when the same hours can do more than one job. ANCC wants 75 CE hours over five years with 25 in pharmacology, plus one professional development category, and as of January 14, 2026 those activities have to fall inside your designated certification period. AANPCB wants 100 contact hours with 25 in advanced pharmacology, plus 1,000 practice hours.

So if your recertification is coming up anyway, there is a version of this that saves you a step. Those hours are accredited, they count toward your 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours, and they cover Nebraska’s opiate prescribing content. If your credential ends in -BC it is ANCC and the package applies. If it ends in -C it came from AANPCB and this package does not meet your pharmacology requirement. The Texas Board of Nursing does not endorse one particular CE company for SB 912. However, the provider you choose can affect how easy it is to locate, download, save and upload your certificates when it is time to renew.

What Is Changing for Texas Nurses Under SB 912?

Texas Senate Bill 912 changes how continuing education compliance is documented during license renewal.

Beginning with renewals on or after September 1, 2026, Texas nurses will need to:

  • Complete the continuing education required for their license and practice;
  • Obtain documentation of successful course completion;
  • Upload their CE certificates through the Texas Nurse Portal; and
  • Complete the license renewal process after their CE compliance has been documented.

The underlying Texas nursing continuing education requirements are not being replaced by SB 912. The principal change is that nurses will document compliance through the new tracking process rather than simply retaining certificates in case of an audit.

What Is the right CE Provider for Texas Nurses After SB 912?

The best CE provider for a particular Texas nurse will depend on the nurse’s license, area of practice and applicable continuing education requirements.

However, nurses preparing for the SB 912 upload process should prioritize providers that offer:

  • Texas-specific renewal education;

2. Make Sure the Certificate Contains Clear Information

A continuing education certificate should clearly document the completed educational activity.

Look for certificates that identify information such as:

  • The learner’s name;
  • The title of the course;
  • The date of completion;
  • The number of contact hours awarded;
  • The continuing education provider;
  • The provider’s accreditation or approval information, when applicable; and
  • Any other documentation relevant to the educational activity.

A professionally generated certificate with clear, legible information is easier to retain, review and upload than an informal email confirmation or a screenshot of a completion page.

3. Choose a Provider That Lets You Access Past Certificates

Instant certificate delivery is important, but continued access also matters.

Nurses may complete CE courses throughout a two-year renewal period and may use more than one provider. By the time renewal arrives, certificates could be stored in several email accounts, download folders or devices.

Before purchasing a course, consider whether the provider gives learners a convenient way to return to their account and retrieve completed-course documentation.

Even when a provider maintains a completion history, nurses should still download and retain their own copies of every certificate.

4. Confirm That the Courses Fit Your Texas Requirements

An easy-to-download certificate does not help if the course itself does not apply to your renewal requirements.

Texas nurses should confirm that their education addresses the continuing competency requirements applicable to their:

  • License type;
  • Current area of practice;
  • Renewal period;
  • Role or specialty; and
  • Applicable mandatory Texas topics.

Texas nurses generally satisfy continuing competency requirements by completing 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education in their area of practice or through another permitted pathway, such as qualifying national nursing certification. Additional topic-specific requirements may apply depending on practice and renewal history. Nurses should verify their individual requirements with the Texas Board of Nursing before renewal.
